Tottenham Hotspur are in real danger of having points docked for illegally playing Wilson Palacios in their Premier League clash against Bolton Wanderers.

The Honduran international was serving a ban for his former club Wigan Athletic, and there are rumours that because he played in the Bolton game, legal action should be taken against Spurs.

The suggestion is that if Palacios was still a Wigan player, his ban would have finished on 31st January, but because he moved to White Hart Lane, the ban should see him cup tied for Carling Cup and FA Cup games, meaning his ban should be carried over these games.

Therefore, his fixture list should read:

Wednesday Jan 21 2009 Burnley CC (A) (cup tied)
Saturday Jan 24 2009 Manchester United FA (A) (cup tied)
Tuesday Jan 27 2009 Stoke City (H) (suspended)
Saturday Jan 31 2009 Bolton Wanderers (A) (suspended)
Sunday Feb 08 2009 Arsenal (H) (ban lifted)

This news was revealed by a Wigan fans' website, and it is not known whether the Premier League will take legal action against Spurs, but what seems certain is that Palacios should have been made unavailable to Harry Redknapp and therefore should not have been played in the 3-2 defeat against Bolton.

I think 20 points would be a fair punishment....

LOL @ Triggle hehe!

Nah I think they wouldn't be docked that many points, and if any punishment was deemed appropriate, it whould probably be applied for the start of next season.

However, any punishment would be more than welcome :D

I will be disgusted if any points deduction take place. It's not the answer, at all...a sufficient fine will do.

Harry Redknapp is a crook and a point deduction may be warranted if he was aware of this, but I doubt he was; he'd know it'd be found out...

Also note that there were claims that Defoe was ineligable for Spurs in the Carling Cup, it turns out he wasn't...

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Good point regarding Defoe, but to me a fine is not a deterrent. Points hurt a club, but a fine can easily be paid. IMO if they are guilty, a points deduction is the only way to deter others from breaking the rules.

A deterrent from what, accidentally making mistakes? I have no doubts that people at Spurs simply didnt realise that he was banned, that's not a crime imo, they didnt even win the game, he can just serve his ban in the next three games.

Winner.

Just like any other sport there are rules and regulations, this particular rule is common knowledge imo. Are you seriously telling me it was a mistake (if guilty)...if so then that means the humble footie fan knows more about the game rules and regulations than a manager that's been in the business for decades....plllease!

And just like any other sport, take F1 for example, there are clear rules that if broken, are punished.

Mistake...lmao :hysterics:

The FA rules and regulations are there to keep the game in check and make it fair for all concerned. And let's face it, football is so business-like, it needs proper governance. In fact football is a revenue generating business, and any unfair advantage outside the rules can impact other participating clubs financially.

Like the Financial sector, they are governed by the FSA. You tell me is say for example HSBC are found guilty of breaking a rule, that they can seriously say...sorry guv it was a mistake?

Yeah, i'm presuming that Redknapp was told he'd be available for the 31st as that was when his ban was originally set to end, i may be wrong, but i don't think Redkanpp would be stupid enough to risk it if he did know.

Good point, he could have been ill-advised.
