Every club has a tale of the one that got away - players nearly signed for a snip who went on to be Premier League stars - and Crystal Palace are no different.

Chairman Simon Jordan told FourFourTwo: 'I agreed a deal for Michael Carrick while he was at West Ham but he wouldn't even return Iain Dowie's calls.

'But I can understand that [now], because I wouldn't return Iain Dowie's calls either.'

Jordan, who fought a bitter legal battle with former manager Dowie, also recalled Palace trying to sign Tim Cahill from Millwall and Dean Ashton from Crewe but failed with the latter because, he admits, 'Dario Gradi doesn't like me.'

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart
