I think it's just the sheer quantity of Mansour's assets that frighten people, we can easily splash 200m on one player and that's never been done before cos even Chelsea had limits. We won't spend 200m on one player, but people fear that we can, and retaliate by claiming we're going to buy the league, when forgetting that most successful teams have spent hundreds of millions themselves.

I've realised in the last few weeks, Mansour and co REALLY mean business, and they will stop at nothing to make us the best club in the world. Come the start of the 2009/10 season we will have some of the best players in the world playing for us, and one of the best managers in the world in charge. I am sure of this.

And an 80m bid for Kaka rejected in the summer apparently. Difference being Chelsea are a small time club and struggle to bring in world class stars.

as apposed to city who are a big time club and can attract the best of the best

david villa
mario gomez
dimitar berbatov
buffon
iker cassisas
ronaldinho
kaka?
c.ronaldo
fernando torres (edit)

just a list of "world class" players that haven't rejected you

Utd's spending power has always been pretty much parallel with that of Real, Internazionale, Milan, Lazio and all the other big clubs, why? because we won a lot of trophies in an era that just happened to be filling up with cash.

What about in around 99, we bought Dwight Yorke for a mighty 12.5m while in Italy, Lazio had bought Marcelo Salas for 20m+, Veron for around 20m, Vieri for 25m and they won sheep all.

Our power in the transfer market was always the same as top clubs everywhere else. And like most of those clubs we earned it through sustained success.

Messi probably is worth 80M and Kaka was sensational in 07...so 80M for either is nothing compared to 130M for a goal-keeper!

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

80M for Messi or Ronaldo would be about right in my opinion.
