Goalkeeper Brad Friedel will make history when he equals the Premier League’s consecutive appearance record – but insists it will mean nothing if Villa don’t get a result against Manchester United.

The American goalkeeper has made 165 straight appearances in the top flight and will equal Portsmouth’s ex-Villa keeper David James’ record of 166 if he plays against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

It will be a remarkable achievement for the 37-year-old, who made most of those appearances while at Blackburn, yet he admits he would take three points against the champions over it every time.

Quote:

Friedel said: “I was told about it a couple of weeks ago but I’m not really a stats guy, which is a bit strange with me being an American.

“It’s nice to be up there in terms of consecutive Premier League game appearances but I don’t play a team sport for individual honours.

“This record won’t matter to me at all if we don’t go out and get a good result against Manchester United.

“If we get a result and I get a record of some sort, then it makes it a little bit nicer, but the most important thing is the team result.”

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Isn't it Lampard who holds that record? Or is this just consecutive goalkeepers appsearences?

Well done to Brad nonetheless.

I doubt Lampard went 4-5 seasons without missing a game...his was for an outfield player I think.

Friedel's record is wonderful.

Friedel's record is wonderful.

Check it up, in the 05/06 season I think, I rememeber a big fuss made over it and he only finally missed a game when he fell ill in the warm up for a game.

Im good at rememebering things and im sure it was 155 appearences when Lampard broke the record and he played more games after that.

Scholes I think i actually remember something about James and an appearence record last season.

I think Lampard held the record, James beat it at the end of last season before Harry dropped him for the FA Cup final and now Friedel will surpass James as the record holder.
