After throwing up his lunch at the last World Cup, relinquishing the captain’s armband, and subsequently getting axed by next manager Steve McClaren, even the most ardent of David Beckham fans would grudgingly admit the number 7’s days in the white, long-sleeved shirt of the three lions, were numbered.

However, the East Londoner forced current England coach Fabio Capello into giving him pitch time in a similar vein as he did when the pair were both at Real Madrid, but the LA Galaxy man who is set to join AC Milan for a short loan spell in the new year, was omitted from the squad to face Germany in a friendly on Wednesday evening.

Beckham is currently on 107 caps, one shy of Bobby Moore's record for an outfield English footballer, but World Cup winner Martin Peters believes it is time for David Beckham to call the curtain down on his international career, and questioned the credibility of his recent, and possibly future, substitute appearances.

Devaluing The Worth Of Caps

Peters is quoted by the Mirror as saying: "David Beckham has been great for the country and has been a great captain - but I think it is the time to maybe look elsewhere, to the future."

He added that former manager Sven Goran Eriksson started a trend by handing out caps to six players at half-time, and believes this devalues the worth of an international appearance.

"Bobby Moore was a great friend of mine - he played 108 games and played 90 minutes every game," Peters mentioned.

"It started with Eriksson changing half-a-dozen players at half-time. I saw the game against Australia at West Ham; he changed the whole team - and we lost 3-1. There were no substitutes when I played. I think it was 1968 when they were brought in; even then Alf [Ramsey] didn't substitute that many - and we played 90 minutes more."

I personally believe Beckham offers too little to be considered for the England squad. He is 33 now but nothing compared to what he once was, which was a world class footballer. Pace isn't everything in football but Beckham is no longer quick or sharp enough to play on the wing, and is unlikely to successfully adapt to a central role. His set-pieces aren't as good as they used to be either.

The second point is the devaluation of caps. I agree that solely giving Beckham pitch-time to break a record is undermining Bobby Moore's achievement.

Discuss.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Yes he can still offer set pieces and dead ball situations so that is enough for me.

He offers NOTHING else...so how is that enough?

Plus, his delivery has declined in recent years.

at 33, stupid statement, vieira still plays for france, and offers little more than an engine to their midfield, at least beckham as more strings to his bow
