Fernando Torres has picked up yet another accolade after being named the Barclays Premier League player of the year at the Northwest Football Awards.
The Reds striker was recognised for his outstanding performances in his first season in England in which he fired 33 goals before helping Spain to European Championship glory.

On receiving news of his award, Torres said: "I am really honoured to win this award but it is down to my manager, my team mates and the fans for the support they have given me since I moved to Liverpool.

"They helped me to settle in so quickly and it is a tribute to them that people outside the club believe I did well enough to deserve this.

"The support I have had from the fans has been fantastic and I would like to dedicate this award to them in particular. Hopefully the next prize we are celebrating will be for the whole club."

Torres beat off the challenge of Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, Everton's Joleon Lescott and Manchester City's Richard Dunne to clinch the award.

Deservedly beating Ronaldo :)

It's a nothing award, and certainly a joke award if Torres manages to beat Ronaldo to it.

Torres' touch is poor.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

In fact, Torres may as well melt the trophy he was awarded as it is nothing but a joke.

Meanwhile, Ryan Giggs was named footballer of the year while his manager Sir Alex Ferguson won an outstanding achievement award following Manchester United's league and Champions League double.

Giggs was utter shite last season.

For once, can you at least respond sensibly?

The awards are worthless -

Ryan Giggs won something and he was nothing but shit last season....explain that.

That is easily explained. Scousers occupied a large percentage of the votes.

Torres had a fantastic first season, but Ronaldo had the best season of any player EVER since the Prem began...making this a nice yet slightly hollow award.

Kevin Phillips :D

Ronaldo in 07/08, Henry in 03/04 & 04/05 and Cantona in 96/97 are the best ever seasons by PL players.

Then you have Shearer, Scholes, Bergkamp who are just light years ahead from Phillips.

All Phillips done was score loads of goals, Ronaldo beat that tally of goals last season and he didn't have the mighty Quinn winning every aerial ball for him :D
