Diego Maradona is set to carry out his first official duties as the new coach of Argentina as he looks set to omit Lionel Messi from his very first game in charge. Maradona, who turned 48 years old yesterday, has yet to be officially presented as the new coach by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) but he has wasted no time to get straight into his role. His first duty is to ensure the pact made between the AFA and FC Barcelona to exclude Lionel Messi for the November 19 friendly against Scotland will be upheld. “The president of Barcelona behaved admirably when he allowed Messi to play in the Olympic Games and we are going to respect the agreement made between the AFA and Barça,” Maradona was quoted as saying by Marca. “The important thing is that Messi remains hungry to play for the national team always,” he added. The legendary player then gave a brief overview of his schedule ahead in the build up to the friendly in Glasgow’s Hampden Park, ironically enough, the very same venue where he scored his first ever goal for the Argentine senior team in 1979. “I will travel to England on Saturday to watch (Carlos) Tévez and (Javier) Mascherano play. Then I’m going to Scotland to start preparing for my debut as a coach,” he revealed, before adding that he might make a pit-stop in Barcelona to meet up with Messi. Maradona was not initially planned to take charge of Los Albiceletes until after the November friendly but current under-23 coach, Sergio Batista has declined to step in and cover temporarily, forcing El Pelusa to push forward his debut. |

Good news. We dont want Messi kicked around by a bunch of mental Scotsmen when we have 3 competitions to win. |

Exactly
I can see Messi and Maradona having alot of success together and I can see it being a Spain v Argentina final in 2 years time providing it works out like that. Of course everybody speaks about Messi and rightly so but there are so many quality players in the Argentine side and it is important to have a great unity but under Diego I know they will.
