Bernd Schuster predictably fielded his second option team but with names like Marcelo, Guti, De la Red, Diarrà and Higuaín all in the starting XI, Madrid were still expected to have this contest under control. It proved anything but. In typical Basque fashion, the Segunda B minnows played with plenty of heart, fire and intensity and it paid off as they went toe to toe and at times even outplayed their illustrious visitors. First Half In fact, Madrid were stunned as early as the second minute. Juan Domínguez easily shrugged off Salgado’s challenges and dribbled past him into the box before coolly slotting past the advancing Dudek at his near post. Madrid tried to respond immediately when Drenthe whipped in across from the left and Higuaín’s header just flashed wide, although he was thrown off balance by Esteguis’ legal shoulder charge. But the merengues were levelled right on ten minutes when Guti released Higuaín towards goal with a typically brilliant diagonal through ball and Pipita finished off clinically with a first time shot on the run. Two minutes later, the Argentine was left unmarked inside the box but he could only send a free header from Salgado’s cross well over the bar. But there was real concern immediately following that miss when De la Red fainted and collapsed to the ground. The medical team rushed onto the pitch to attend to him as he lay on the turf unresponsive, but he was eventually stretchered off safely after a few minutes after regaining consciousness. From the resumption, Dudek was forced into action when he made an acrobatic save to palm out Esteguis’ curling freekick from 20 yards. And he had to be alert again to tip over a point-blank header from the ensuing corner. The pressure from the home sides paid off and on 20 minutes, they were back in front. Aguirre robbed Metzelder off the ball, skipped down his right flank to the touchline and floated in a cross for an unmarked Domínguez, who easily nodded past a hapless Dudek. The La Liga champions then thought they had equalized when Saviola tapped in Metzelder’s cushioned header from close range following a Guti freekick but the flag was up for offside. Moments after that, Higuaín missed yet another glorious opportunity when he hassled Larrainzar off the ball right outside the Unión penalty area but instead of making a run into the box, he went for the first time shot and his effort sailed straight into the hands of Otermin. It was the Irún-based outfit who ended the half stronger as the impressive Domínguez continued to trouble the visiting backline, especially Salgado, and created a few decent half chances. Second Half The match had to be suspended briefly immediately following the restart as a thick cloud of smoke from flares blanketed the Unión goal. Madrid came to life when the match resumed and they looked a completely different side. First, Guti released Saviola through on goal but The Rabbit’s poor first touch let him down as he allowed the ball to run too far ahead of him and Otermin rushed out to collect safely. Drenthe then drilled in a snapshot on the run, forcing Otermin to bundle it out at his near post. And from the resulting corner, Los Blancos drew levelled. Saviola made no mistakes this time when he picked up a loose ball at the far post and he curled in a lovely shot with his left foot straight into the top right corner of the goal. Just as Schuster’s men were starting to build momentum, they were stunned again when Unión restored the lead for a second time in the 63rd minute. And it was sloppy defending that cost Madrid again when Aguirre’s low cross from the right evaded Heinze and Metzelder right infront of their goal mouth but not Goikoetxea, who tapped the ball past Dudek from close range at full stretch. On 70 minutes, Madrid had the ball at the back of the net when Sneijder’s freekick was guided in by Higuaín but Heinze had carelessly strayed offside before the cross was played in. Los Merengues struggled to create anything meaningful after that as they slowly ran out of steam while Unión found their second wind to effortlessly hold on for a famous victory. At the final whistle, the home fans immediately swarmed the pitch to greet their heroes, and their visiting idols, but with the second leg still to come at the Bernabéu, it is still anyone’s game. LINE-UPS Real Unión: Otermin – Larrainzar, Berruet, Gurrutxaga, Esteguis – Quero (Gabarrain 68’), Villar (Salcedo 76’), Romo, Aguirre – Goikoetxea (Manu García 83’), Domínguez Real Madrid: Dudek – Salgado, Metzelder, Heinze, Marcelo – Diarrà (Sneijder 68’), De la Red (Javi García 18’), Guti – Drenthe, Higuaín (Bueno 88’), Saviola REAL UNIÓN 3-2 REAL MADRID 1-0: Real Unión (Domínguez 2’) 1-1: Real Madrid (Higuaín 10’) 2-1: Real Unión (Domínguez 20’) 2-2: Real Madrid (Saviola 53’) 3-2: Real Unión (Goikoetxea 63’) I hope De La Red is ok, the last thing Spanish football needs is another Antonion Puerta incident. Onto the game, why is there a second leg in this!?! Its a packed fixture list as it is, we dont need unecessary games in a cup no-one really wants to win (though ill be chuffed if we win it ).

Madrid loses 3-2 to third-division Real Union in Copa del Rey Third-division Real Union upset Real Madrid 3-2 in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, continuing the Spanish league champion's poor record in the knockout competition it hasn't won since 1993. Juan Dominguez scored twice and Inaki Goikoetxea netted the winner for Real Union, while Gonzalo Higuain and Javier Saviola replied in the fourth round first-leg match for Madrid, which will need a victory to progress from the return leg at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Nov. 12. Madrid was the fourth top-flight team to suffer an upset in this week's Copa del Rey games. On Wednesday, Villarreal was humiliated 5-0 at third-division Polideportivo Ejido, Racing Santander went down 2-1 at second-division Murcia, while Sevilla lost 1-0 at third-division Ponferradina. There was a scare in the 14th minute when Madrid's Spain midfielder Ruben De La Red fell as he walked away from the Real Union penalty area. De La Red was carried off on a stretcher after being treated for two minutes. Reports said De La Red fainted but quickly recovered consciousness at Real Union's Gal Stadium. The 23-year-old player was taken to hospital as a precaution but would reportedly be allowed to travel back to Madrid with his teammates. Madrid coach Bernd Schuster fielded an understrength team, with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, captain Raul Gonzalez, striker Ruud van Nistelrooy among those rested. Real Union, which won the competition in 1924, stunned the league champions in the second minute when Dominguez forced his way past Madrid right back Michel Salgado and sidefooted his shot past goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek. Madrid took eight minutes to tie the score, Higuain capitalizing on a defence-splitting pass from captain Jose Maria "Guti" Gutierrez to sidefoot home. The minnows regained the lead in the 21st after Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder lost possession. Joseba Aguirre crossed from the right and Dominguez ran in to power a header past Dudek. Saviola, who had wasted a clear chance moments earlier, made amends by equalizing in the 53rd minute with a curling, rising shot after Real Union failed to deal with a corner. However, Real Union again responded and Goikoetxea turned home Felix Quero's cross from the right in the 63rd for his team's winning goal. First-division clubs have entered the competition at this stage, with rules stating that those who are drawn against lower-league opponents must play the first leg away from home.

To be fair, i dont mind the two legged version when the big teams play each other after Christmas, because it gives me something to watch in midweek when the CL isnt on. But having to play Benidorm twice ... what a fucking waste of time. If Villareal end up knocking out that side that beat them 5-0 it will really piss me off. |

The Los Merengues trainer only gave a few minutes of his time in the post-match conference after his “B” team were stunned 3-2 at Real Unión in the Round of 32 Copa clash. He freely admitted that his players were far too laid-back but he did not reproach their attitude. “We lost because we were too relaxed. But we’re not too concerned because we know there’s still the return match at the Bernabéu,” he said. Schuster only took one more question from reporters and it was to get his view of the game. “We made a lot of soft errors, especially in defence, and we didn’t have a lot of luck,” he concluded. On the other hand, Unión coach Iñaki Alonso was ecstatic with his side’s memorable triumph. And eventhough he is aware that his team will be at a severe disadvantage in the second leg having conceded two away goals, he didn’t seem to care too much at this moment. “We won this match fair and square against a Madrid team who had a lot of desire to do well. Now, we can all go to the Bernabéu to enjoy the experience and live out a dream “I don’t know how I will be able to sleep tonight,” he beamed. Schuster really does lack any class or respect for the opposition. |

For a club that has a real problem with its public image at the moment, he is the worst coach they could have hired. |

Lets bullet point this - Schuster is miserable dull and boring -he moans at refs and cannot accept defeat -never praises or gives any respect to their opponents - in Spain press conferences last 45-1hr but with him you get 3mins - he walks out of press conferences - he has an awful hairstyle |
