Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh from picking up the top gong in the FifPro awards, is the favourite to take the title.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas are also among the front-runners as the pair have been short-listed after their success with Spain at Euro 2008.

The winner, voted for by national captains and coaches, will be unveiled at a star-studded ceremony at Zurich's opera theatre on 12th January.

The nominees are always a joke, sure there are players who deserve a place but ultimately they just pick players at big clubs that have big reputations.

And a few blatently obvious choices like Arshavin who if he had not gotten all that media attention would be nowhere near that list.

Ballack - joke.
Drogba - sick joke.
Deco - fcuk off.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Drogba is definitely a joke as he was injured most of the year.

As was Ballack.

Deco is the biggest joke of the lot....two very good performances at the Euros makes up for a season of mediocrity?

surely john terry is the biggest joke, being in there yet no ferdinand or vidic who were both streets ahead of the 'moscow bottler'

Terry is a world class defender but Rio is the best and deserves to be well in contention. He'd be in my top 5 no doubt.

Deco being in there is the biggest joke of all, no question about that.

Winner.

He was very near it, in contention with Carvalho, Vidic and Rio. Terry may have missed that penalty but he had a superb game nonetheless.

Deco being in there is a disgrace; Elcule can surely back that up.
