Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has said manager Rafael Benitez was wrong to regard signing Sergio Aguero as too risky, and that the Reds missed out on a bargain by not taking the Argentine star from Atletico Madrid... Fernando Torres disagrees with manager Rafa Benitez whohas claimed that signing Sergio Aguero was a risk not worth taking. Aguero and Torres played together at Atletico Madrid, and Torres sees his former team-mate as the main danger facing Liverpool ahead of the Champions League clash between the two clubs on Wednesday. Torres signed for Liverpool last year, 12 months after Aguero was rejected by Benitez for lacking experience. Benitez insisted: "Two years ago agents were talking with us about players and Aguero was one of those but he was too young and [Atletico] paid big money for him, around 18 million euro [£14m] for a player who was a risk. "In the Premier League it's different and sometimes players will need more time here to improve." However, Torres begs to differ. In his opinion, Liverpool missed a great opportunity to sign a genuine talent. "We knew what Aguero would become from the first training session. "It was obvious even then he was a special player. He has all the qualities needed to be a top-class striker. He's in good form and has started the season well." Torres himself has the misfortune of having to sit out the eagerly-anticipated clash against his former club because of a hamstring injury. |
