A very entertaining game at the Stadio Olimpico saw Inter establish an early lead over hosts Roma after top quality finishing from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, ended with the ball in the back of the net. The Swedish striker was on hand again at the start of the second half to slot past Cristiano Doni in the Roma goal. Just before the hour mark two quick goals from Dejan Stankovic and Obinna stretched Inter’s lead to 4-0. End-to end attacking play made this match a wonderful spectacle for the neutral, and a great advert for Italian football. Roma 0-4 Inter This one was certainly the match of the weekend on paper; featuring the two teams which finished first and second last season in Serie A. Roma are going through a difficult run of form at the moment, having started the Serie A campaign poorly. Inter in contrast have done well, and find themselves at the top of the table along with Lazio and Udinese. Matches between these two 'big' teams are always full of excitement, and usually a few goals. Inter went into the match as favourites, but Roma were hoping that home advantage would count for something. An 82 000-strong full house was present at the Stadio Olimpico for this cracker encounter, and they were in for a heart breaking game of football. First Half The match kicked off in typically fast paced fashion, with the Olimpico crowd willing their team forward towards Inter’s goal. Inter were quickest out of the blocks, scoring a fourth minute goal that stunned the Olimpico crowd into silence. In incredible circumstances Inter went ahead when Ibrahimovic broke away from his marker, to lob the ball over the out-rushing Doni in the Roma box. None of the Roma defenders noticed the onside run from the Swede, and a cool finish allowed the Nerazzurri to have an early command over the game. Roma had looked lively in the early exchanges, galvanised by the presence of their captain Totti, back from injury. The Inter goal was a shock to Roma’s play and the Nerazzurri put a great deal of pressure on Luciano Spalletti’s men, forcing corner after corner in the early stages. On 11 minutes Quaresma controlled a long ball from midfield just outside the Roma box and the Portuguese speedster hit a shot, which lacked pace directly at Doni, who collected comfortably. Two minutes later Inter were on the attack again, and a great one-two between Muntari and Maicon ended with a disappointing strike wide of Doni’s goal leaving the Inter players moaning about a wasted chance. A counter attack from Roma on the right wing was quickly stopped by the Inter defence, but within a minute the Giallorossi were back on the offensive, and De Rossi’s eventual shot slipped just wide on Julio Cesar’s goal. It was end-to-end stuff at the Olimpico, with both sides understanding the importance of the match. Roma began to attack through their returning captain, but the Beneamata defence was up to the challenge and they kept the Giallorossi at bay. The pace of the match continued to be held at a high level, with chances at either end requiring the rear guards to be on their toes. On 24 minutes Muntari dribbled past Riise on the right wing, but the powerful midfielder wasted his chance by attempting to score from a difficult angle, and instead ended up scuffing his shot wide of the post. Four minutes later, the ball fell to De Rossi outside the Inter area and the Italian international cracked a powerful strike that swirved just wide, producing a disappointed groan from the Olimpico fans. Totti showed glimpses of the vision and creativity that Roma have been missing, but even the playmaking genius was finding it difficult to beat the impressively organised Inter defence. The first yellow card of the match was shown to Vucinic, after a foul on Obina and a few unsavoury words aimed at referee Rizzoli. In the 33rd minute a great through ball from Totti found Perrotta who lobbed the keeper and saw the ball go into the back of the net, only to notice that the linesman’s flag had disallowed his goal. Towards the end of the half Roma created a few threatening chances up front, with talisman Totti growing in confidence. A pass from the wing was met by a well controlled flick back into the Inter box from Totti which found the head of Vucinic, requiring the efforts of keeper Julio Cesar to deny an equaliser. Roma grew in attacking prowess in the last few minutes of the half, and impressive passing in the last third should have produced more from the Giallorossi, but Julio Cesar stood firm in his goal. The referee blew for half time, sending the players into the change rooms. Second Half Inter got the second half underway, with no substitutions being made by either coach. Roma concentration was again found wanting as the big Swede, Ibrahimovic broke through the Giallorosso defence to slot past Doni in a one-on-one with the Brazilian keeper, making it two goals to nil for the visitors. A minute later Roma almost pulled one back, but Cicinho’s header was disappointing and Julio Cesar remained unbeaten. There was a sense of urgency about the Roma play at this point, with Spalletti looking very uncomfortable on the Giallorosso bench. Tactically speaking, this game was a feast of attacking football, with both teams pushing forward and looking for the win. In the 54th minute Roman hearts were broken once more when a half volley from Stankovic flew into the goal from outside the area. The score board was morbid reading for the home fans, and it would only get worse after Obinna got in on the act with another fantastic strike from range leaving Doni with little to do in the Roma goal. Roma flags in the stands continued to fly, but club president Rosella Sensi was visibly distraught, as was Spalletti on the bench. Totti’s earmy impact on the game was positive, but he began to drift out of the game at this point, perhaps losing confidence, or perhaps it was simply a question of fitness. To Roma’s credit the team continued to play positive football, and in the 67th minute Totti unleashed a shot, which tested Julio Cesar who parried for a corner. In the 71st minute Maicon’s header hit the post, keeping the already embarrassing score from increasing further. A free kick in the 76th minute from Riise required a fingertip save from Julio Cesar to send it spiralling wide of the post. Soon after a crack from Vucinic went just over the Inter crossbar. In thwe 81st minute the hero of the match was substituted out to applause as Ibrahimovic made way for Cruz. The last ten minutes saw the pace slow down slightly, but both teams refused to give up hope for more goals. Roma were unable to score a consolation, and the Nerazzurri played out the last few minutes before celebrating a fantastic 4-0 win over one of their biggest rivals for the Scudetto title. ROMA - INTER 0–4 Goals: Ibrahimovic 4’ 47’, Stankovic 54’, Obinna 55’ (Inter) Roma (4-2-3-1): Doni, Cicinho, Juan, Loria, Riise, De Rossi, Totti (Menez 69’), Taddei (Okaka 75’), Aquilani, Perrotta, Vucinic. Roma have been shite so far this season...but still, nice win nonetheless. Mourinho obviously saw Chelsea win 5-0 away from home (something he never managed at home let alone away)...and tried matching it. |

Ibrahimovich might get his act together one day but for now i am unconvinced about him. He has great ability but his mindset doesn't seem to be right in big matches or when his team are getting spanked and he needs to lift them. He does score cracking goals though and has style and class, a poor mans Berbatov. Impressive result for Inter they might realise their potential as a club if Mourinho instills some resiliance into them. They have class players, attacking players and all they need is the right attitude and some mental toughness and they could be a real force. |

Hamsik scored again yesterday. 4 goals in 6 this season. He will score loads from midfield over his career. Cracking player... |

Nah i'd prefer to have Ibra than Berbatov. The latter's attitude and miset is just as bad, plus Ibra holds it up far better and is better in the air as well as being just as good at Berba in every other department. Hamsik is awesome though. |
![]() Winner. "If I go to Anfield and someone puts the ball into the box and Carragher hammers it out of play the fans applaud. At Camp Nou you would never be applauded for that." - Xavi | |
