The two-time World Champions crashed to their first defeat at the hands of their rivals in 35 years - another disappointing result in a below-par World Cup qualification campaign.

"Basile spoke to the president of AFA (Julio Grondona) and quit for personal reasons," Argentina Football Association (AFA) spokesman Ernesto Cherquis told reporters.

"The national teams committee tried to persuade him to postpone his decision but Basile was very decided, very determined (and) the resignation has been accepted."

Basile was appointed after the 2006 World Cup for his second spell in charge and led Argentina to the Copa America final in 2007, subsequently losing 3-0 to Brazil.

He has however come under-fire at home in recent months as Argentina have collected just 16 points from 10 qualification games.

There you are Homer, Argentina no longer have a poor coach

Winner.

Who will take over Homie?

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

Cheers

I dont know which other coaches are after the job. All it needs is someone strong enough to drop big egos if they're playing shit and to have the sense to drop Riquelme for good and build the team around Messi.

can't see batistuta being appointed homer, maybe ossie ardiles should stake a claim, his attacking philosophy would suit the argentine style, other that oscar ruggeri a no nonsense type to deal with the ego's
