Who else is there, like DaG said, at least Walcott can improve. Owen is bull, Crouch is alright but better as an impact player, Defoe is crap for England, Agbonglahor is rubbish at finishing. |

I firmly believe Walcott will be England's best player by 2010. |

definately owen, we have nobody with anywhere the experience or as prolific as him at international level. He's done the business for country time and time again when asked. he played a good amount last season for newcastle and still netted a good set. We need to let potential replacements play with him to learn from, as it stands nobody comes close in the england setup. We can't even think about 2010 until we actually qualify for it first and owen can help us do that |

whats walcott actually done to warrant that place? The step up to international level is massive and he needs to show he is able to do it before just handing him the place. Especially if its a formation in which we play a near lone striker up front. Rooney plays too deep to be considered as playing alongside him Owen is not bull, he is still our best player on the international stage, he's our most prolific player and has the experience of playing on the biggest stage against the biggest teams. We throw a bunch of youngsters out there and they will get thoroughly battered. We need to let new blood learn from him as he did from shearer and as almost all our previous leading strikers have done before that. |

but theres still nobody else as of yet near his ability at international level. Owen has performed when its been asked of him, he still looks sharp when playing for newcastle. He has had a couple of really big injuries but has come through them and looks to be getting back on course really well. So long as he remains fit for newcastle next season he will be netting a good amount of goals. |

Owen's goal record for England speaks for itself (40 goals is it?) but I am with DaG on this one. He has been in decline since he started picking up injuries and I just don't think he's anything like the player he was 7 years ago. He has done well for Newcastle recently so maybe a place on the bench is warranted. |

Owen is basically playing AMC for Newcastle though, has lost a yard, or ten, of pace and can't be relied on to stay fit. Walcott is the perfect foil for Rooney, as they can grow togehter and form a partnership for the long term. Rooney holds it up and Walcott gets in behind. I agree, they need to see how Walcott performs this season, but at the back end of last season and also in this pre-season, he's starting to look the real deal. |

Owen is not England's best player Internationally. Ferdinand, Terry, Cole, and Joe Cole are better IMO. |

I constantly slate Rooney but he has been one of England's best performers in the last 4 years. |

So if we were facing Germany tomorrow with the winner going forward to the next world championships would you put out a totally unproven player at full international level who has still yet to play a full season. Or would you go for the striker that even in between injuries and barren periods for clubs has stepped up and scored winnig goals for his country, who is the most prolifc one out there for us at the moment. Owen has been allegedly going to the dogs for about 4-5 years if you ask around yet he has still done the business for england when asked. He's an utter anomoly, whilst some players are amazing for club and useless for england, Owen seems to have just been born for international level. Couldnt break 20 leagues goals in a season to save his life but could happily bag goals against France, Germany, Argentina and more. We need that kind of experience up front and given his chance he will perform again for england and show just what we were missing. I honestly believe that had Owen been fit for most of our qualifying campaign we would have been in the euro's. When heading into the qualifying for the next tournament I hope to god that Capello utilises him for the key matches rather than tries his luck with new players. |

I think Rooney behind Walcott could be fantastic actually. Rooney, while I dont rate all his game, would probably provide good service for Theo in behind the defence. |

i dont mean owen is the best international player we have, only that currently nobody is anywhere near him in terms of striker for england. Newcastle play him deeper, its nothing to do with him not being able to be a striker anymore, its simply newcastles formation and how they play him. They play deep because they know they are sodding useless at defending, they need to have most of their team in their own half in the hope they dont conceed. Put him in another team with more going forward and owen can play striker again. He still has pace, maybe not the pace he had in his early twenties but he can still skin a man. His positioning in the box is exceptional, ping a ball in from a free kick, corner etc and he'll get on the end of it. While we are looking to qualify for the world cup we will need him undoubtedly, until someone steps up to the plate and proves they can fill his shoes it would be madness to replace him |
