Alexander Hleb: Arsenal are being held back by 'political differences'

Alexander Hleb, the former Arsenal midfielder, added to the growing sense of uncertainty surrounding his old club when he warned that "political differences" were undermining Arsene Wenger's plans for the new season.

Flying high: Alexaner Hleb is enjoying life at his new club Barcelona
Wenger has so far suffered a summer of discontent with Hleb and Mathieu Flamini leaving, and serious questions being asked over his ability to bring in reinforcements. Doubts remain over the future of Emmanuel Adebayor while Eduardo, who broke his left leg at Birmingham City in February is not expected to be back until two months into the new season.

Now Hleb, who joined Barcelona in an £11.9 million deal last week, has spoken out about the problems facing Wenger, hinting that the rigid wage structure at the Emirates was undermining Arsenal's ability to compete with the best in the Premier League and Europe.

"Wenger is everything to Arsenal," Hleb told The Daily Telegraph, as his new club prepare for the start of their pre-season tour in Scotland. "The future for Arsenal, if Wenger stays, is that they will always play at the top. But of course it is difficult now because Arsenal have a few political differences.

"When he leaves, I think this is a difficult time coming for Arsenal. Sometimes I think that Arsenal do not want to keep this team, not give something more."

It is this financial inflexibility which, in Hleb's view, could yet lead to them losing Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona. "These are fantastic players, Adebayor and Cesc," Hleb said. "Every team would like to keep these players. For me it would be fantastic if they came to Barcelona. Those players would bring good energy and power to this club. For Barcelona, it would be fantastic, and for me personally as well, if they leave."

His remarks may rile Wenger, but he was at pains to point out his respect for his former manager. "I worked with him for three years – it was unbelievable, fantastic," he said. "He will always stay in my head and in my heart."

Meanwhile Arsenal refused to comment yesterday on reports that Kolo Toure has contracted a mild form of malaria. Toure is in Austria with Arsenal for their pre-season tour but failed to feature on Tuesday against Hungarian side Szombathely Haladas. It is understood he complained of tiredness and dizziness and was taken to a hospital in Vienna. His condition is not thought to be serious.

Its disapointing to see Hleb continously slag the club off when it was Arsenal who made him.

I bet its the media mis-quoting him again. Last time when he was asked about Fabregas he was quoted as saying:

"I'd love to see him at Barcelona as he still has feelings for the club"

What he actually said was: "He is an Arsenal player, so i cannot speak about him, but given the chance I'd love to play wih him again at Barcelona as i think he still has feelings for the club".

So i wouldnt believe it, especially coming from the Telegraph which tends to print bull as standard.

Winner.

"If I go to Anfield and someone puts the ball into the box and Carragher hammers it out of play the fans applaud. At Camp Nou you would never be applauded for that." - Xavi
