First time i saw Eto'o play, against Chelsea in the CL, it really did help me appreiciate how good he is, with his movement and, more than anything, his work rate. Thats why i rate him so highly...and that was a bad game by his standards.

So i agree that a live game can give you a very different perspective on a player, but TV helps to get a good enough view on a player to judge whether he's good or not. However, match of the day (or, Ronaldo bashing as it becamlast season) gives nowhere near the whole story. So i would advise anyone not to base opinions on MOTD.

Very good point El.

Highlights will make Ronaldo look like God but he is far from the finished article. Football First offers broader range of action to base an opinion on a player's overall game.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I would rather have DaGunners' opinion on a player he's seen on TV play 5 times than yours on a player you've seen live once against United. You cannot judge a player on one performance. One performance often gives an indication of the quality a player possesses but a truer reflection is given over a longer period of time.

who said i've only seem him once mate, i was being sarcastic when saying once is enough, i'm seen him a few times now, and not once has he impressed me, infact he's been a passenger, , but this just ain't all about him it's about players in general,
i'm looking forward to seeing deco again, he was obviously a great talent at barca(i did see him play for them)and i'll be interested to see what he's like at chelsea.
i'm looking forward to seeing del pieiro and buffon live at the emirates and old trafford

Also, managers dont even see players they buy live more than a handful of times. They just dont have time during a season. They go mostly by what their scouts say and VIDEO FOOTAGE.

exactly, they go by what their scouts say, if you didnt have to see a player live to judge, scouts would be redundant, managers would just watch a dvd or something

And if you were to judge Gerrard on the times you've seen him against United, the likes of Kevin Nolan would be higher in your thoughts :D

On a serious note, watching games live impose the reality the tempo the game is played at and also gives you a full pitch view allowing you to analyse movement the TV doesn't always capture, but I think you should take your TV comment back.

Screened games allow you to see a lot of off-the-ball movement so that aspect of the game can still be appreciated by viewers, and opinions generated by screened games are definitely valid.

i'm not saying tv doesnt give a fantastic insight into the game, but i'm just saying in order to slate or praise theres more to it than seeing a few games on tv, another aspect to live games are weather conditions, live you get a feel for it you are experiencing the same as the players, on tv sometime it can look better than it is, wind, rain, etc

Yeah, but there's little that Messi does hat you dont see on TV tbh. He tends to stick to his wing when its going well and drift and come looking for the ball when it doesnt (this is based on Chelsea away, Villareal away and Valencia home (6-0 :D ). TV captures Messi all the time as he tends to be the main focus.

This is another reason i believe that Messi is nowhere near Ronaldinho level.

Winner.

Yep, fair point, same with Wimbledon :D

Calm winds, average temperature and a slick, damp, lubricous surface are the best conditions for me :)
