Manchester United have agreed to pay Tottenham a club-record 28million pounds for Dimitar Berbatov - but may have to wait a few weeks before completing the deal.

Sir Alex Ferguson finally made his move for the Bulgarian striker over the weekend.

An initial bid of 20m pounds was rejected and it was then reported that United would make a 25m pounds take-it-or-leave it offer.

However, the two clubs have now come to an agreement after chairman Daniel Levy insisted the champions pay closer to 30m pounds.

Publicly, Spurs are still insisting the striker isn’t for sale but head coach Juande Ramos has been planning for next season without him for some time.

The 27-year-old has made it clear he wants to leave and while he preferred a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid because of the lifestyle in Spain, United are the only club to have followed up their interest with a solid bid.

Tottenham had put a new contract in place in case no offer was forthcoming, but the player showed little interest in signing it.

Reports in the London Evening Standard suggest Spurs will still not let him leave for Old Trafford until they find a replacement and the club have joined Arsenal and Chelsea in the hunt for Zenit St Petersburg's Euro 2008 Russian star Andrei Arshavin.

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz is also a target, although Tottenham are already having difficulty negotiating with Blackburn over England winger David Bentley.

The Lancashire club want 18m pounds for the former Arsenal star who is keen to return to London and is a Spurs fan.

Tottenham may also use the funds from the Berbatov sale to make another move for Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o, although he has already made it clear he isn't interested in coming to White Hart Lane.

But while Berbatov will go to United, they won't allow assistant manager Gus Poyet to follow him.

The Uruguayan is on Ferguson's wish list to replace Carlos Queiroz, but Spurs are determined to keep him and he is happy at the club.

Seriously, Frank Lampard is an absolute legend of the game. He needs to be recognised in some way eg. Frank Lampard OBE, Sir Frank Lampard or some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Greatest ownage machine: Scholes. Absolute animal when he was a regular poster, I always knew I was in the right when he was backing me up, and I couldn't wait to read a topic that he was posting in because I knew he'd be tearing someone apart

berbatov is a classy player but i'm not too keen on him

he's 27, granted thats not old but he is already at his peak and may have 1 or 2 quality years with us before he begins to decline. And when strikers hit the 30 mark they usually decline rapidly. So spending £30m on a player that will "probably" be at the top for 2 years isn't worth it

for that reason i'm more keen on huntelaar as he is young and has the potential to develop into a better player than berbatov IMO

30M is a massive fee but I still feel he has 4 more years in his prime. Players that don't rely on pace aren't as prone to declining at around 28-31.

yes technical players generally last longer but their physical attributes still degenerate. for midfielders like scholes this isn't such a huge obstacle but for defenders and strikers especially its very difficult to adapt

of course their is know way of knowing, look at how good raul, shearer and sheringham were in their mid 30's, but its a big risk especially when there are other great options such as eto'o, villa, huntelaar, aguero etc

Yeh, you bring up some good points. I think 30M is overpricing.
