Tottenham are launching an audacious bid to hijack Barcelona's move for Russia star Andrei Arshavin and take the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker to White Hart Lane for £18million.

With Tottenham resigned to losing Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United and willing to sell Robbie Keane to Liverpool, coach Juande Ramos and director of football, Damien Comolli, are negotiating a series of deals to take top strikers to White Hart Lane.

Target: Andrey Arshavin

Espanyol striker Luis Garcia is also a target, though Tottenham are baulking at the Spanish club's £12m valuation of the 27-year-old, while a bid for Spartak Moscow's star from Euro 2008, Roman Pavlyuchenko, is being considered.

But it is the attempted capture of 27-year-old Arshavin that would represent the biggest coup for Spurs.

Officials from the club are expected to fly out to St Petersburg this week hoping to exploit an impasse in negotiations between Barca and Zenit and persuade Arshavin that he can fulfil his ambition at Spurs.

Russia's top player in Euro 2008, who was one of the revelations of the tournament, is desperate to move to Barca but the Catalan club have gone cold on the deal, leaving Zenit with no bidders.

Barca, having agreed a provisional £12m fee before Euro 2008, are unwilling to go ahead with deal now that Zenit have increased the fee to £20m after his displays in Austria and Switzerland.

Barca are also in crisis, with club president Joan Laporta deeply undermined by a no-confidence vote last week.

Laporta refused to resign despite more than 60 per cent of fans voting against him and on Thursday eight of his directors quit in protest at his intransigence, including the sporting director, Marc Ingla, who was in charge of transfer negotiations.

Arshavin understandably wants to join a Champions League team but no bid from Chelsea has materialised, Arsenal and Manchester United have shown no interest and Liverpool cannot afford him.

Ramos hopes that the funds anticipated by the sales of Berbatov and Keane will allow Comolli to strike a deal with a £18m bid that would persuade Zenit to sell.

Comolli then has to convince the player that an £80,000-a-week wage at Spurs would fulfil his ambitions.

Comolli attended many of Russia's matches at Euro 2008, having had Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko scouted throughout the season.

Zenit coach Dick Advocaat, who is resigned to losing Arshavin, said: 'He was instrumental in us winning the league and though he is 27, everyone saw at Euro 2008 he has the legs of a young player.

'He was tremendous for us and could do the same anywhere in the world.

Absolutely no chance of this happening, Comoli must be smoking crack if he thinks Arshavin will join Spurs.

Exactly, even average players like VDV and Emmanuelson turned them down. Also, why would they accept 18M, when we reportedly bid 19M?
