Morocco stripped of Nations Cup

Morocco has been stripped of hosting the African Nations Cup and banned from the competition after it requested a postponement of the tournament due to fears over the Ebola outbreak.

The Confederation of African Football's (CAF) executive committee took the decision at a meeting in Cairo on Tuesday and decided to keep the dates as planned for January and February next year.

CAF will now decide between several other bids from nations keen to host the African Nations Cup finals in Morocco's place.

A CAF statement said: "Having firmly and unanimously notified its decision to keep the competition on the dates indicated, the executive committee confirmed that the Orange Africa Cup of Nations 2015 will not take place in Morocco.

"Accordingly, and following the refusal of the Moroccan party, the executive committee has decided that the national team of Morocco is automatically disqualified and will not take part in the 30th edition of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations in 2015."

Possible replacements as hosts include Algeria, Angola, Egypt and Nigeria.

CAF's statement added: "The executive committee took note of receipt... of some applications of national associations confirming their desire to host the 2015 competition on the dates agreed.

"These applications are currently under review, and the executive committee will finalise the selection of the successful national association shortly and confirm the place and date of the draw of the final tournament at the same time."

Lol, what a joke.

Holders Nigeria were bundled out of the African Nations Cup qualifiers on Wednesday as the final six places for the 2015 finals were decided.

Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Guinea, the Ivory Coast and Mali all made certain of their spots and join the 10 countries who had already booked their places at the tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

Nigeria had to beat Group A winners South Africa in their last qualifier at their new stadium in Uyo to stand a chance of defending their title at the Jan. 17 to Feb. 8 continental championship.

They were 2-0 down shortly after halftime, however, after quick goals either side of the interval from striker Tokelo Rantie.

Nigeria pulled one back from Sone Aluko with 22 minutes remaining and the Hull City striker then equalised deep into stoppage time against opponents, who had been reduced to 10 men for the last 19 minutes.

Congo finished second behind South Africa after a 1-0 win in Sudan, where Francis Ndanga's second-half free kick ensured that veteran coach Claude Le Roy will go to a record-extending eighth tournament.

Guinea beat Uganda 2-0 in Casablanca to finish second in Group E behind Ghana, who topped the standings after a 3-1 home win over Togo.

Guinea had to move their match to a neutral venue because of a ban on playing at home where the deadly Ebola virus has claimed more than 1,000 lives.

The game was held in Morocco, who were stripped of hosting the tournament last week after asking for a postponement amid fears that fans travelling to the finals could spread the virus to their country.

Mali ended Algeria's 100 percent record in Group B to book their place with Seydou Keita scoring a first-half penalty and Mustapha Yatabare adding a second after the break in a 2-0 win in Bamako.

Ivory Coast needed only to draw with already-qualified Cameroon and squeezed through in a goalless clash against a side reduced to 10 men for the last half-hour after captain Stephane Mbia was sent off.

The top two teams in each of the seven groups qualified plus the best third-placed finisher, which was the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Two goals from Yannick Bolasie in a 3-1 home win over Sierra Leone helped them to nine points from their six matches, but they had to wait several hours for their place to be confirmed.

Record winners Egypt could have snatched their spot had they won by two goals away in Tunisia, but they fell to a 2-1 defeat despite leading 1-0 at halftime.

Algeria and the Cape Verde Islands qualified after just four group matches last month and were joined after the weekend's penultimate round by Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gabon, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia and Zambia.

New hosts Equatorial Guinea, disqualified in the preliminary knockout rounds for fielding an illegible player, have also been handed a place at the finals.

You've not heard the best of it...

Ivory Coast and Cameroon fiddle their way to a very convenient draw - and spark riot

The last few moments of Ivory Coast's African Cup of Nations qualifier witnessed something extraordinary: both teams sitting back and simply refusing to play football.

With the score at 0-0, both Cameroon and Ivory Coast were guaranteed a place in next year's tournament - and as the clock ran down, the sides decided to abandon any pretence of making it competitive.

The match saw only one meaningful chance: Ivory Coast's Yaya Toure had a free kick cleared off the line after a 57th-minute incident which saw Cameroon skipper Stephane Mbia inexplicably sent off for a foul, having been adjudged the last defender despite the presence of Henri Bedimo.

After that, the teams played for a draw that served them both.

There was even a happy ending for the side whose hopes were scuppered by the contrived result: DR Congo earned a spot in any case by virtue of being the best of the third-placed teams in the qualifying tournament.

The farcical scenes of static players passing the ball back and forth, with the opposing team making literally no effort to close them down, gave an almost spooky reminder of one of The Simpson's most famous sporting scenes:

It would have been funny, had there not been one big problem. Though both teams were happy, fans in the packed stadium in the Cameroonian city of Abidjan were livid at having paid good money to watch a no-contest, and a small riot broke out.

After the final whistle, outraged fans invaded the playing area - with former Arsenal star Gervinho having his shorts stolen, several fans getting beaten savagely by police, and one of the goalposts being torn down in the mayhem.

Surprised Clayton wasn't quicker to spot the glaring factual error in this article. Penultimate paragraph.
