De Gea (8) - Still learning his way in the English league, but he has again saved us on many occasions with a mixed bag of out-of-form defenders in front of him. Still has critics and rightly so, but he deserves big credit for his performances this season under the cirumstances. Evra (6) - Has been really good going forward but his defending has been shocking yet again, although I think this has been his best season in 2-3 years . Rafael (4) - Very erratic player even at his best, he's had his injuries but he hasn't been good enough this season. One of our worst. Ferdinand (3) - A few top performance but overall he's been woeful, some truly embarrassing performances. People say he's been past it for years but he really is now. An absolute shadow of the player he once was. Vidic (5) - Decent at times, great goal against Bayern and all. But as you would expect with a defender of his type, his decline has been rapid. Not able for the top strikers these days. He should be able to get another year or so of good performances in Serie A though. Good luck to him. Smalling (4) - So bad with the ball at his feet. He has often been a towering presence at the back, winning headers for fun, but his overall defensive game hasn't been up to scratch. He's regressed this season without A DOUBT. Jones (6) - Not the biggest fan of his, so erratic, impetuous and downright stupid at times. But he has had some very good perfoemances at both right-back and centre-back and has shown me for the first time, that he might be a good defender one day. He's got to get himself focused for next season and start showing the club he has what it takes. Carrick (5) - After last season, probably his best at the club, Michael has really let himself down this season. Fletcher (5) - Showed some promise in an otherwise bland midfield, but he was never really a top player anyways. I don't think he'll ever get back to the form he was in around 2009-2010. Mata (7) - Has progressed well since joining, making the kind of contribution that has been expected of him given his form in recent season. He has his faults, but he shows his quality when it matters. Kagawa (5) - Meh, an average season for Shinji, obviously he hasn't fitted in as we had hoped, but I still have high hopes for him. Once we start playing slick, fast football again, he should start to shine. Januzaj (7) - Good debut season for the young lad, some moments of class and although his form deteriorated during the season, it's to be expected for such an inexperienced and very slight lad. Young (6) - I thought Young did okay at times, commendable considering the stick he gets from our fans. I hope he goes though, he can still be a good player for a top 10 PL club, and I'm sure with some of his explosive finishing, he'll have attracted the attention of some of them. Valencia (6) - One of the players who was a "Moyes type" he had some solid performances, although he's such a horribly limited player, I hope we see the back of him as well, although he does come in useful at times. Nani (2) - Hasn't had much of a chance but some of the performances he did have were laboured, looks like he doesn't really care. As much as I'd like to keep hold of him (players with his ability are worth persisting with) I think it might be time for him to go as well. Welbeck (6) - His lack of natural finishing ability has failed him several times as usual, but he puts a really good shift in and has some qualities I really like. Still has a lot of work to do to become a permanent fixture in the side. If he wants to be a proper striker, I think he might have to move on unfortunately. Hernandez (5) - Similarly to Nani he hasn't had many chances, but he has a decent goal return anyways. A good box striker. Great energy and attitude. I hope he's revitalised next season, but with Rooney and van Persie still here he might not get much of a chance to prove his worth. Rooney (8) - Solid season from Wayne. He carried us at times, but let us down in some big games. van Persie (6) - Hampered by injuries, but still a good goal return, some of his general play has been very poor, but in his defence we haven't been playing to his strengths and it's showed in his demeanour on the pitch. |

I think De Gea deserves an 8 considering that out of his 37 league games he's played with around 36 different defensive selections. People can go on all day long about his faults with set-pieces and dominating his area, but there's literally no proper organisation happening in front of him, and he still has a decent amount of clean sheets and big saves to his name. He saves his defenders more than he lets them down, and they let him down as well, don't forget that. All things considered an 8 is fair. |

They also have a lot more responsibility due to De Gea. It's a goalkeepers job as much as anyone's to organise a defence, and when he is a poor communicator and stays on his line, that is when a defence starts to panic and lose confidence. He's had a good season De Gea, made some top saves and his continuely improving. He doesn't deserve an 8 though for me. |

Ridiculously harsh on Giroud. Whatever you may say about him he's scored 22 goals, for that he deserves a lot more than a 5/10. |

I say it's the centre-back pairing that has the biggest responsibility of organising the defence, esecially when the goalkeeper is a young, inexperienced lad from Spain who can barely speak the language. Sure he needs to be more assertive and try to learn the language more quickly but it shouldn't be his job to organise the players in front of him, they're supposed to orgaise themselves. I am very reluctant to criticise de Gea so much. We don't even have a centre-back pairing, it's an absoluite shambles back there, the only players we have who know anything about what level is required at the top are past it, the others can't even organise themselves for 10 seconds. And we're not really giving them much chance to build any sort of relationship anyways. It's a different pair every game, not to mention the full-backs. I think we've gone more or less the whole season without playing the same defence twice. How the fuck is that even possible, or more to the point, how is it allowed to happen? It's a complete mess back there and it's why I've been saying that we need a top, experienced centre-back in the summer. Forget about this Smalling-Jones pipe dream and get someone in there who knows a thing or two about organising a top-level defence. Next season we'll be without Vidic and almost certainly Evra and Ferdinand as well. Our defence next season could be - de Gea, Rafael, Smalling, Jones, Shaw - I shudder at the thought. |

Nah, I disagree entirely with centre halves being the point of organisation. Of course, they should organise, but a goalkeeper can see the whole pitch and pretty much everything that transpires. He's got the best view I the ground, and he doesn't have to worry about marking anyone or keeping in line whilst he does it. The best goalkeepers can have great games and keep clean sheets without making a save if they have a capable defence in front of them which often goes under the radar. As you say though, our defence has been less than capable this season which I agree is the bigger contribution to our woes. Rio and Vidic are past it sadly, but you also have to remember our defenders coming through are still quite young; you can't disregard that if you're going to use it as a point for De Gea. Evans/Jones is the best partnership we can get next season and one of which is very good, not fantastic but will be a lot better if used consistently. Smalling has actually had a good season defensively at centre half, a lot of people have been blinded by his woeful displays at right back. Anyway, I've got De Gea down as the joint second best player for us this year, I'm hardly saying he's been shit. All things considered, which includes him being young, inexperienced and not knowing the language - he's had a good season. However, those weaknesses have been a problem for us more than people realise. He's improving them year on year which is encouraging for the most part, but he's not done enough for me this year to give out an eight. Edited by ChrissyG11, May 11 2014, 09:13 PM.
